If you have a copy of your child's records, we will make a copy for our records. If you don't have your child's records, we will request them from your child's previous school. Procedures for Requesting Special Education Records

If you are another school or educational institution:

If you are an outside agency that is not a school (SSI, Vocational Rehab, etc.):

  • Send your request for records to ccss.sped@cowetaschools.net
  • The request must be signed by the parent/legal guardian if the student is under the age of 18. If the student is 18 years old or older, the request must be signed by the student.
  • Special Education records will be sent to you in a timely manner.

If you are a parent/legal guardian of a current for former student under the age of 18, or if you are a former student 18 years old or older:

  • Please complete, sign, and email the Parent/Student Request for Special Education Records form to ccss.sped@cowetaschools.net. If the student is under the age of 18, the parent/legal guardian must sign the request. if the student if 18 years old or older, the student must sign the request.
  • In the email, please include the ID of the person who signs the request.
  • Special Education records will be sent to you in a timely manner. (According to FERPA, schools must comply with requests for records within 45 days.)

Based on the Georgia Records Retention schedules set forth by the Secretary of State, Special Education records are destroyed when the student reaches the age of 22. Records will not be available for former students who are 22 years old or older.
